Stress is often viewed as something to eliminate. In reality, stress is an essential part of human biology.
Every challenge, workout, presentation, deadline, or difficult conversation activates the body’s stress response. In healthy amounts, this response improves focus, increases energy, and prepares the body to perform at its best.
The problem isn’t stress itself. The problem is when the body never has an opportunity to recover.
Cortisol, one of the body’s primary stress hormones, helps regulate metabolism, immune function, blood pressure, and energy production. It naturally rises and falls throughout the day, allowing the body to respond appropriately to changing demands. Chronic stress, however, can disrupt this rhythm and affect multiple aspects of physical and mental health.
Persistently elevated stress has been associated with poor sleep, fatigue, increased abdominal fat, impaired immune function, elevated blood sugar, reduced exercise recovery, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. Over time, it can also contribute to cardiovascular and metabolic disease.
High performers are particularly vulnerable because they often normalize constant pressure while overlooking the importance of recovery.
Performance is not built solely during periods of effort. It is built during periods of recovery as well.
Regular physical activity, restorative sleep, mindfulness practices, strong social connections, proper nutrition, and intentional recovery all help regulate the body’s stress response. For some individuals, evaluating hormone balance, metabolic health, or other underlying contributors may also be appropriate.
The objective isn’t to eliminate stress from life.
It’s to build a body that can respond to challenges efficiently, recover effectively, and remain resilient over the long term. That balance is what supports both exceptional performance and lasting health.
